A letter to Parents

For children under the age of 9, their creativity is vibrant and full of potential, like a budding sprout that needs protection and encouragement. Creative instruction should be left to professional art teachers, while the role of parents is to listen to the stories behind their children's artwork, greatly benefiting their ability to express themselves. When children’s artwork may not accurately depict its subject, it is crucial that parents avoid mocking or criticizing, as it could damage their self-esteem. Each child views the world through a unique lens, so naturally, artwork on the same theme will vary widely.

A great piece of art is not limited to abstract or boundless imagination; it stems from a child’s meticulous observation and thoughtful reflection. For instance, when drawing elephants, teachers guide the children to observe specific characteristics and their environments. The children then capture these essential features based on their understanding.

Learning to paint involves more than just acquiring techniques; it enhances thinking, language skills, cognitive flexibility, and hand-eye coordination comprehensively. Moreover, building a child’s confidence is an integral part of the curriculum, requiring the teacher’s patience and parental support. Parents should approach their children’s artistic efforts with patience and a childlike curiosity, offering praise and affirmation that will benefit the child's development in the long run.

For children over 9 who begin to show interest in more realistic styles of drawing, such as comics, watercolors, or acrylics, it's advisable to start with basic sketching. Learning at this stage should not be tedious but engaging through interesting sketching lessons. The goal is to provide a solid foundation in understanding light and shadow, perspective, and structure, allowing children to excel in further artistic explorations.

Additionally, the curriculum should also foster creativity by integrating design studies, allowing children to apply the sketching skills they've learned to stimulate their imagination and innovative capabilities.
